What is Happening?

Humanity has been confined now for more than one month. A month of uncertainty, fear and unprecedented challenges. While traditional educational institutes have been panicking over the day after Corona, tech companies can’t help but grin and rub their hands eagerly. But let’s take a deeper look into the global phenomenon that became the protagonist of our daily lives.

Step 1. Isolation

The two first months of 2020 have been stigmatized by a so-called deadly virus. Nobody was ready for what was in store for all of us. Schools and retail shops closed and companies switch to remote work. Panic spread fast and #stayathome is the main trend. Governments plead the public to practice social distancing. Necessary precautions such as gloves and surgical masks are overpriced and rare to find. The empty shelves of the supermarkets are proof of the lockdown frenzy. Shockingly, toilet paper and rubbing alcohol are the new gold. So, the whole world follows the guidelines and hopes to “flatten the curve”.

Step 2. Passive information intake

Somehow a month passes. People are more vulnerable and used to the confinement. Authorities and government officials announce the newest developments and the number of cases and deaths. Undoubtedly, it still is morbid and daunting. Medical professionals are fighting tirelessly to cure the patients. Even though they are experiencing a significant lack of protective equipment, mainly because of bureaucratic delays and the absence of crisis management. But does the general population get informed about the reality behind the curtains? Not really. It is up to us to search for the truth and the motives behind global pandemics and domestic confinement.

Step 3. Uncertainty

After the lockdown of many non-essential businesses and educational institutes, a lot of questions have come up concerning the next phase. Indeed, now that the whole world is on pause, emerging issues such as the health care systems, digital education, and food insecurity. According to statistics, the closure of schools and universities has affected more than 1,5 billion learners. Obviously, this decision had a significant impact on students and professors. The global teaching approach hit the brakes and now it has to be reshaped, effectively and immediately. While up until the quarantine there were discussions about the potential switch to digital learning, now it seems to be the salvation of the future of education.

Hello, Education 4.0

Therefore, time is more pressing than ever. Humankind seeks a solution and it has to adapt to the demands and fit in the newest technologies. Similarly to the fourth wave of the industrial revolution, the term “Education 4.0” refers to learning methodologies that align with the smart technology. Evidently, educational institutes can ensure the success of their alumni as soon as they implement cyber-physical systems in their environments. This would be the first step for them to prepare accordingly and adapt effectively to the evolving industries.

The New Era.

In the last weeks, the teaching staff has switched physical classrooms with a digital space. Utilizing applications such as Adobe Connect, Zoom, Skype, and others, specifically created for distance learning, education professionals were able to pick up the work. Edtech companies state that this could be the breakthrough we have been waiting for. Despite the general belief that an online class means less control, the minds behind online educational platforms state that the teachers/ professors still are able to monitor every move and increase the quality of the teaching material for each student. Moreover, the case of innovative distance learning can be considerably more affordable, since a lot of fixed costs are no longer of the equation.
